Dr. Ross Taddeo Orthodontics is proud to offer high quality orthodontic care for the communities of East Orlando including Avalon Park, and Waterford Lakes. Our aim is to make your orthodontic treatment go as smoothly as it possibly can. Unfortunately, emergencies can sometimes occur during treatment and we want to make sure that you’re fully prepared and ready to deal with any possible problems that may happen.
Thankfully, there are only a few truly major emergencies that can occur during orthodontic treatment. These include:
If you happen to suffer from any of these, please seek help as soon as possible. Go to an emergency room, if you believe that’s your best option, or just start by visiting your dentist. Your dentist is trained to handle a wide range of dental problems and can likely offer the treatment you need. Depending on the diagnosis, we can adjust your orthodontic treatment plan as needed.
Most emergencies that occur during orthodontic treatment are actually minor, though these situations may still cause irritation or discomfort. It’s usually best to try to soothe the area of discomfort and then give us a call to schedule an appointment. Here are a few of the more common orthodontic problems and how you should go about treating these problems.
This problem is usually caused by either playing around with the braces or eating foods that are hard or sticky. If the bracket or band is still attached to the wire, leave it as it is – just make sure not to connect any elastics to it. If it happens to be irritating your mouth, you can cover the troublesome part with orthodontic wax. If the bracket or band has come off, make sure to save any loose parts for when you visit us. Give us a call at our East Orlando office and let us know if you have either of these problems so we can schedule an appointment for you.
As your teeth begin to move, the archwire of your braces may start poking near the back of your mouth or irritating your cheeks. In this situation, you can try moving the wire into a better position by using a Q-Tip or a pencil eraser. Sometimes you may be able to use tweezers to gently move a misplaced wire or tie. If the wire won’t move and the problem persists, you may be able to cut the end off with a nail clipper that’s been sterilized in alcohol – but make sure to call our office first for guidance! If that doesn’t work, place orthodontic wax on the parts that are causing discomfort for you and schedule an appointment with us.
During your orthodontic treatment, your teeth may become slightly loosened. Don’t worry though; this is completely normal! This movement may sometimes be accompanied by tenderness, especially after your braces have been placed or adjusted. If you happen to have some minor soreness, we recommend trying the following:
