Adult Treatment

When you're looking for adult treatment or braces for adults in and around the East Orlando, Avalon Park, and Waterford Lakes, FL areas, Dr. Ross Taddeo Orthodontics is proud to be your choice. While many may assume that braces and orthodontic treatment are only for kids and teenagers, we want to say that this couldn't be further from the truth. More and more adults are now taking advantage of orthodontic treatment because of the benefits of a smile makeover - namely, healthier teeth and a boost in confidence. The truth is: there's really no such thing as being too old for braces!

The Differences of Adult Treatment

While healthy teeth can be moved at any age, there are still two fundamental differences between adult treatment and earlier treatment. The first is that the growth and development of the jaw has been completed in adults. Changes in actual jaw structure can't be accomplished with orthodontic appliances in the way they can with a growing child.

The other main difference is that adults are more likely to have periodontal disease. Periodontal disease will damage your gum tissues; if they're not healthy during orthodontics, then bone loss can occur and weaken the long-term health of your teeth. This is why any gum disease must be brought under control before orthodontic treatment can start. To maintain the health of your gums, you'll need to keep up good oral hygiene along with going to regular professional cleanings.

Our Treatment Options

Dr. Ross Taddeo Orthodontics understands that each patient has different concerns. That's why we strive to offer a wide array of orthodontic treatments in order to suit any of a patient's potential needs. All orthodontic treatments essentially work the same way though: they employ light and constant force to move teeth into their proper alignment. However, there are still many differences with each of the treatments. These treatment options that we offer include the following:

Traditional Metal Braces - This is the standard and most common orthodontic treatment option. These traditional braces feature small metal brackets that are bonded to the front of the teeth with a thin wire that runs through them. The wire is attached on either end to metal bands that go around a back molar.

Clear Braces - These braces are similar to metal braces, but with the main difference being that the brackets are made of ceramic, plastic, or a combination of both. Because the brackets blend into the natural color of the teeth, this allows a patient to have a more discreet orthodontic treatment. The downside to clear braces is that they are more susceptible to breakage.

Lingual Braces - These metal braces are bonded to the back of your teeth rather than the front of them. Though this makes it the most discreet treatment type, it's also more expensive and will take more time getting used to.

Clear Aligners - Clear aligners, or Invisalign, is used as an alternative to braces. This treatment process consists of a series of plastic, removable aligners that are each meant to be worn in a specific order for two weeks at a time. These clear aligners are customized for your teeth and will fit perfectly over them, gradually moving them slightly over time in a similar way to braces.

Retention

No matter which type of orthodontic treatment you undergo, it will be crucial for you to use a retainer afterward. When teeth aren't held in place by a retainer long enough for new supporting bone to develop, they can drift back into their previously unfavorable positions. Wearing your retainer as instructed will help you maintain your new and beautiful smile.
