Dr. Taddeo Orthodontics is committed to delivering the best orthodontic treatment care in a friendly and welcoming environment. Understanding your therapeutic options is important when choosing a treatment regimen. When deciding between Invisalign and traditional braces, a side-by-side comparison of both methods can be useful. We’re always happy to help and educate new and prospective patients. Don’t forget that we’re here to answer any questions you may have.

How Orthodontic Appliances Work

Several techniques are available to correct teeth alignment problems. The two best-known options are braces and Invisalign. They both shift teeth into proper position by applying gentle and consistent pressure over long periods of time. Periodontal ligaments, the connective tissue that keeps teeth in place, will adjust to compensate for these shifts.

With advanced digital imaging technologies, we can take precise measurements and impressions inside your mouth. Your aligner trays or braces are crafted using this digital data. While both methods work in similar ways, it’s important to understand how each one accomplishes your treatment goals:

  • Invisalign uses a series of clear aligner trays that are worn for 22 hours each day. The trays are removable, allowing you to take them out for eating, drinking and oral hygiene.
  • Braces use a combination of brackets, elastic bands, spacers and an archwire affixed to your teeth and worn 24 hours a day.

Aligner trays are crafted from SmartTrack, a translucent plastic material designed for comfortable and nearly invisible wear. Metal braces can still be seen with the naked eye, but they now come in more attractive and lightweight modern versions. Clear braces offer a more discreet look with ceramic brackets in either clear or ivory shades to match your teeth.

Cost and Long-Term Care

As you consider your options, you’ll naturally want to evaluate their costs. While many people believe that Invisalign is more expensive than traditional braces, the truth is more complex. In many cases, the costs of both methods are roughly comparable. However, these depend largely on your individual treatment needs. Your final costs may also be affected by your insurance coverage along with available flexible spending and healthcare savings account funds.

With both types of treatments, you must be mindful of your oral hygiene. For aligner trays, you should brush after every meal and keep the trays clean. As for braces, you’ll have to change how you brush and floss. Care should be taken to clean thoroughly, removing trapped food particles. You must also floss carefully to avoid getting it caught and shredded by wires.

After your treatment period is complete, Dr. Taddeo will instruct you to wear a retainer. This is important to keep your teeth from shifting back to their original misalignment. You may be fitted with a fixed or removable retainer, depending on your needs.
