Braces vs. Invisalign- Which One to Get?

Braces vs. Invisalign- Which One to Get?
Posted on 09/21/2021

When you’re starting your orthodontic treatment, you may be confused about what type of braces to get, and which one is best for you. At Taddeo Orthodontics, we guide our patients to what is best for them individually. If you do have the option to choose between traditional braces or Invisalign, it’s important to consider what your lifestyle is like. While both braces and Invisalign are designed to do the same thing, there are some significant differences between the two as well as the pros and cons of each.

Invisalign

Invisalign is an exciting alternative treatment that comes with unique benefits. It works to straighten teeth without the use of any wires or brackets whatsoever. Instead, they are clear, custom-made, plastic removable aligners that move the teeth. However, there are some disadvantages. Here are the pros and cons of Invisalign:

Pros

  • Are effective at moving the teeth for a healthier smile.
  • Aligners are clear, which means that they are unnoticeable to most people.
  • No uncomfortable straightening appointments to sit through.
  • Free to eat whatever foods you like.
  • Easy to clean your teeth because you can remove the aligners before brushing/flossing
  • The aligners are smooth and non-irritating, which means they are softer to the gums.
  • Invisalign allows for remote monitoring and adjustments.

Cons

  • Invisalign is generally a more expensive treatment than braces.
  • It’s not fit for everyone; depending on your case, you may not be qualified for Invisalign.
  • Because they are removable, you have to be more disciplined to make sure to put them on right after you eat/clean.

Metal Braces

Metal braces still come with their unique benefits. Braces consist of metal bands and brackets made of stainless steel or clear ceramic. They are also bonded to the teeth with a wire that runs through the brackets. Below are some of the pros and cons of metal braces that are important to know.

Pros

  • Are very effective at moving the teeth for a straighter smile.
  • Are permanently bonded.
  • Metal braces can treat virtually any orthodontic condition, making them a universal option for patients.
  • Traditional metal braces are affordable, making them a cost-effective option for orthodontic care.

Cons

  • Cannot remove them from your teeth.
  • Extra diligence is required when brushing and flossing due to food & plaque build-up.
  • Must be adjusted regularly by your orthodontist, which can be uncomfortable.
  • Must avoid eating certain foods, such as hard, gooey, and sticky foods.
  • Sore spots can develop on the inside of cheeks from poking wires and rubbing brackets.
  • The metal brackets and wires are more noticeable to others, sometimes posing a nuisance.
