How Do Braces Work?

How do Braces Work?

At Taddeo Orthodontics, we use braces to achieve beautiful, straight smiles for all of our patients. Braces are incredibly durable, effective, and have stood the test of time. They continue to be the “go-to” option for orthodontic treatment because they can solve mild to severe orthodontic issues. That being said, many patients don’t actually know how braces work and how their teeth move. The good news is, our orthodontist and staff can break down how braces work in easy and simple terms. That way, you don’t have to be an orthodontist to understand braces.

Braces Apply a Light Force to Move Teeth

When a light push or force is applied to a tooth, the bone surrounding this tooth can be remodeled. Our bones that hold our teeth in place can be slowly reshaped using a light force like braces or Invisalign. In the simplest terms, at the beginning of a patient’s orthodontic treatment or when they visit the orthodontist to tighten their wires and brackets, this light force is applied by the braces. A patient’s teeth will move during the first few days after this force is applied. That’s why your teeth can feel sore or have minor discomfort for a few days, your teeth are moving and the braces are hard at work!

It is also imperative to follow the instructions of your orthodontist to ensure your orthodontic treatment is following the plan. Even one day not wearing your elastics or having a broken wire or bracket can disrupt the teeth movement and your orthodontic treatment plan. For your individualized orthodontics in, your orthodontist may use a combination of brackets, wires, and elastics or clear aligners to apply this light force and eventually move your teeth.
